SHELTER

It is a cold, crisp morning. Members from each clan have started arriving at the mouth of the Elk River. Everyone knows that the first rule of camping is never to leave it too late to build a shelter. It’s time to build yours. What does your shelter look like? Click one...
An open-fronted shelter with a reindeer-hide roof sloping down to the ground. A cross-beam across the top deflects smoke from the fire in front of the shelter, and traps the warmth inside.

One large humped shelter of black and white seal hide; everyone in your clan sleeps inside. This is your clan’s summer/autumn shelter; the winter one is made of snow, but Elk River isn’t far enough north.

Now the shelters are made, people begin to lay out items to trade. You walk through the camp marvelling at the different treasures. You have an old knife to trade, what do you swap it for?

FOOD

As you walk around your stomach starts to rumble. There are so many new smells from foods that you have never tasted before. What will you decide to eat?
Auroch-gut sausage with a delicious mix of marrow fat, blood and crushed hazelnut.
Reed-pollen cakes with stewed trout and bog mushrooms.
Baked marshmallow roots, grey seal stew and chewy dried cod.
Roast wood pigeons with flatcakes of crushed hazelnuts and pine pollen, covered in honey.
Sweet mash of seal fat and cloudberries with whale skin and frozen seal.
Stewed willow grouse with reindeer marrow and tongues, mashed cloudberries and heather tea.

BOATS

You have built a shelter, traded, shared your skills and sampled some amazing new food. Now it’s time to play. Someone calls, ‘first to the other edge of the riverbank wins some forest horse meat!’.
